I received a very nice email from Justin de Leon, the director of the upcoming documentary Give to Live. Justin wanted me to know that he is in the final stages of pre-production for the film and he will begin filming in Tanzania and Kenya at the end of the year.

Justin describes the film this way:

“Its a film that looks at charitable giving and foreign aid and its effects in Africa in a very unique way. By exploring the psychology of giving and receiving, the economic effects of charitable giving and foreign aid, and the social effects of compassion Give to Live seeks to explore those issues which keep all of us from giving (where is the money going, there is too much corruption, are we creating dependencies by just continuing to give, who is it actually benefiting, why act globally when there is so much need locally, and aren’t our governments better equipped to address these issues) in order to lower the hurdles in which prevent people from being engaged and giving…

Give to Live is a project by Project Justice (www.ProjectJustice.org) and will be following the stories of five Americans ranging from a physician, students, working professionals, and musicians as they attempt to address issues in Africa. The film will also be exploring the harsh realities of life in refugee camps and orphanages as well as sustainable development projects.”

The issues that Justin will be tackling in the film are very important issues, especially at a time when the economy is in the tank, people are reevaluating their charitable gifts, and the need around the world is skyrocketing. As Justin points out in his email, he is not setting out to provide definite answers for people, but instead endeavors to provide the information people need to come to their own conclusions.

Give to Live is scheduled to be completed in mid-2010. You can learn more about the project by going to the Give to Live website.

Good luck to Justin and his crew. I look forward to seeing the film.
